The nearest station to Cage Street was bustling with activity when Dominique arrived, though not a single person actually seemed to be going anywhere. Every traveller she passed by seemed inexplicably angry. Dodging in and out, she looked around, scanning faces as she searched for Wren.

He wasn’t difficult to find. She spotted him stood off to the side with his arms crossed, speaking with a station attendant. The bruise on his face was still healing, giving him a decidedly rough look that didn’t exactly match up with his image. She was sure his father had been thrilled when he’d seen him.

“Are you seriously telling me that there’s no trains running at all?” he asked, one hand in his hair, tugging through the short strands. The man he was accosting looked as though he wasn’t even listening. “Can you at least tell me what’s happened?”

Whatever the attendant offered up as an explanation was clearly unsatisfactory, as Wren threw his hands up and stormed away afterwards. Surprised that he’d given up his argument so quickly, she intercepted him, stepping out to block his path. “Hello, Kinglet.”

Wren stopped abruptly. “You again? What are you doing in Nadre-end?”

“Looking for work. Specifically, you.” She smiled as Wren stared at her. “Your dad said you might be here. Looks like he was right.”

“My dad?” Wren looked mildly horrified now. “Where did you see my dad?”

“Your house.”

“You went to my—!” Wren cut himself off, gritting his teeth. “I’m going to kill Rian for this! You figured out where I live because of what he said didn’t you?” Dominique shrugged, which only seemed to infuriate him further. “Great. Now Dad’s going to be asking a million questions that I’m going to have to dodge—why would you do that? What was so important that you wanted to find me?”

“I was wondering if you have any errands that need doing.” Dominique said. “I keep getting turned down for employment, which sucks because I came all this way looking for something to keep us going. Your dad mentioned that you were going to meet Rian in Risthe-end, but I guess you can’t do that now because the trains aren’t running, right?”

“That’s not really—you think I told my dad the truth? Are you serious?” Wren shook his head. “No, I was trying to get to Caul-end instead. Rian has no idea I’m coming, but I have something I need to give him.”

Dominique recalled what his father had said about their plans for later. Walking to Risthe-end from here was one thing. Caul-end, on the other hand, was the other side of the city. “You won’t be home in time for dinner reservations if you go now,” Dominique pointed out.

“What, did you have an entire bloody conversation with my dad? Did he invite you in for tea too?”

“No, he definitely wanted to keep me out on the doorstep. He was just angry that you were running out on dinner.” How easy it was to be wealthy, she thought. Instead of worrying about where the next meal was coming from, Mr.
